Lifes Simple Pleasures to Savour
"The best things in life are free". We have all heard it at some point in our lives, but have you ever stopped to REALLY think about that statement?
I recently did and came to realize that lifes simple pleasures hold true value.
A hefty bank account is sweet, but celebrating the tiny everyday things that make our lives special should be savored. Remember- Having all the money in the world does not guarantee happiness.
What makes you happy?
Here are 10 of lifes simple pleasures that I hold dear to my heart:
1. Curling up on the couch to read a great book
There is something so soothing about nestling into your favorite nook of couch with a cup of tea or glass of water to dive into a new novel or re-read a favorite book. This simple pleasure gets extra points when it’s with my freshly bathed and pyjama’d daughter reading "Skippyjon Jones in Mummy Trouble" by Judy Schachner.

2. Freshly Washed and Clean Smelling Bed Linens
Words cannot describe how seductive it feels to crawl into my bed after a long day when the sheets, pillow cases and down comforter have been washed and hung out to dry. Sure, it’s a task to tackle the linens every week but the reward of sinking into my lighted scented lavender sanctuary is pure joy. Yes, cat hair will return with vengeance the following day but as I slip into sweet slumber, I am content knowing that a delightful bed is truly one of life’s little luxuries.
3. A Garden in the Spring
How beautiful a feeling to watch in wonder as your garden slowly comes to life each spring? I come home after work every day in April and May and am silently inspired by each tiny bud pushing their way through the soil after a harsh Montreal winter. I look forward to the gift of fresh blooms soon to be.
4. Parking Lot Angels
My mother always “asked the angels for a good spot” when I was a child. It’s funny the things one remembers as an adult…this is one of those things for me. Whenever I pull into a crowded Costco Price Club, I think of what my Mama and ask the parking lot angels to find me a spot close to the entrance- doesn't always work (lol!) but when it does I am grateful.

5. Rainy Day Sleeping In
The pitter-patter of rain on your window and knowing you don’t have to get out of bed. Need I say more?
(Mental Note to Self: Maybe this should have been #1 on my list of lifes little pleasures?)
6. Snow Days
No School for the kiddies. No work for the Adults. Doesn’t happen all the often, but gosh when it does, you can hear a universal cheer. There is magic in the air when snow is piling up outside and I’m cozy by the fire with hot chocolate, board games and my daughter. The work will be there tomorrow, until then I’ll take this simple pleasure and roll with it!
7. REAL Mail
I love the feeling of opening my mailbox to the unexpected surprise of receiving a REAL letter. Not a bill, not a flyer but a true handwritten note from a distant friend or family member.

8. A Good Long Walk
Some of my favorite moments have a common thread… a good long walk! I can be alone or with the dog. Sometimes it’s with my sister or my daughter. When I was a child, the walks were with the family clan after Christmas Dinner. Just being outside in the fresh air and not feeling in a hurry to be anywhere or do anything is sheer bliss.
9. Talking to your Best Friend
In terms of inner peace, nothing quite rivals the feeling of spilling your heart and soul out to the ones you trust the most. When everything these days seems complicated and busy, taking some time for a heart to heart with your best friend can work wonders. My best friend, Cynthia, is teaching English in South Korea and I miss her tremendously! Thank god for Skype. Nothing compares to getting a hug from her and sharing a glass of red wine while we swap details of our day to day, but just knowing she’s a free Skype Call away eases the pain of distance. I always feel better after a good chat with my best friend.
10. Finishing what you started
How many times have you started something and never quite got around to finishing it? One of my resolutions is to always finish what I start. Why? Simply because it feels good! When you complete a task or project you set out to do, the reward is accomplishment and that my friends, pays handsome returns.

Food for Thought
I'm a firm believer in gratitude. Being thankful for simple pleasures and appreciative for the many blessings bestowed upon oneself is good for the soul.
Do you have someone that you need to say "Thank you" to? Perhaps for financial assistance that someone has helped you with or for a job interview that you recently had the opportunity to attend?
