How to Absolutely Save Money!

I have read Jack Canfield’s national bestseller "The Success Principles" more times than I can count. I adore his writing style and find the material easy to digest. The book is one of my most cherished possessions and I thought I'd share with you one of my favourite lessons.

It is Principle 59: Master the Spending Game

Jack tells a story of his shopping excursion with his son and speaks of how he came across a book titled How to Absolutely Save Money: The Only Guide You'll Ever Need. Upon flipping through it, he discovered that there were only the same three words on every single page!

Guess what they were? Spend less money.
Pretty smart author in my humble opinion.

We live in a consumer society. We are addicted to spending. Yes! I use the word addiction because we have surrendered to spending habitually or obsessively.

This cannot be healthy! We need to master how to absolutely save money before anything else, because if we don't we'll find ourselves in a sad state of affairs.

Spending too much money on items we don't really need is a terrible habit and I am the first one to raise my hand and admit, I am guilty.

For so many years I have rationalised my shopping splurges by lying to myself and thinking "These new shoes will make me feel better!" It's not true, don't believe the hype.

The fleeting happiness I feel after a new purchase is quickly diminished by late night tossing and turning.
I can't be the only one. That is why I've built SavingMoneySmarts.com.

So take that wise advice from the book. Spend Less Money!

One suggestion Jack makes, is to figure out how much did you spend last year? Pull out every single item in your house that you did not use last year. Yes, in every closet, junk drawer, garage, shelf and cabinet. That means old computer equipment, sports gear, electronics, dishes, clothes, toys, books.

When he says everything, he means everything! Pile it all up in one central location and add up the cost of each item.

Feel the burn yet? Sad but true, you have spent money on all of this stuff and the truth of the matter is that when you look at all the "stuff" it probably makes you angry at yourself for being so careless. I know it did for me.

I completed that exercise and then I turned my anger into focus, did a major clean up and had a garage sale!
